Here's a fun take on the antler trend in design. Aren't these plush taxidermy pieces from girl savage the best?

luxe in the kitchen

I know we've all seen this image a hundred times but...how smokin' hot is this black chandelier? I'm a total convert to this luxe look. Thank you, Domino, for the memories.

nautical by nature

I know it seems obvious - I live in New England and work in the marine science field - of course I like all things nautical. Not surprisingly, there are far too many rocks and shells and marine life elements in our home. Nick made me do a purge of some beach detritus a while back. I got rid of tons of dust-collecting shells and urchin tests. But nautical style doesn't have to be blatantly beachy. Or come with the faint odor of dead echinoderm.

I prefer the "haunted sea captain's house" interpretation of nautical style.

mermaid quilt

A few months ago, I stumbled upon Heather Ross' "Mendocino" fabric collection and fell in love with the mermaids, octopus, and kelp. It was perfect for a quilt for June - gorgeous and right up my marine biologist/non-girly alley. First, though, I had to learn how to make a quilt. :)

With help from Elizabeth at Oh, Fransson! I managed to pull it off! Here's the finished product:

Kitchen of the Day

This is a fabulous mix of old and new. The tiny subway tile and industrial legs on the island scream modern, but the sink, cabinets, and stove are all farmhouse. I love it!

mixing patterns

I especially heart flowers and stripes together. shocking, another post from me about stripes. but, hear this and hear it well, mixing patterns is okay. in fact, it is recommended.

you are my fave jr.

Often modern pieces look best when juxtaposed against antique elements.

spooky chic

My husband and I used to live in Salem, Massachusetts - a kooky town we love. We even got married on the town Common. It's a place we hope to move back to in the near future, once we sell our current home. Long story, don't ask.

I love old houses (almost exclusively), but modern people gotta live there, right? I utterly approve when the interior design reflects the antiquity of the house...but with a modern flare.

Here are some subtle examples:

Not so subtle....

wellies and mudrooms

It must be my longing for fall, but I love wellies and mudrooms. really, I love wellies anywhere. they almost serve as their own little piece of art. prop them up by your front door and all of a sudden you have a vintage chic entryway. I recently bought green ones and for this reason alone, I cannot wait for the winter in northern california to hit. (I realize I am about two years late in my welliedom, they are probably not "hip" anymore, but I do not care).

soft pinks

there is something so gorgeous about a soft pink glow in autumn (especially in california). I love ali mcgraw's natural blush in love story.

bobbi brown has a great soft pink collection to help achieve this look (thick ali eyebrows - oh I can relate - are sold separately). their pretty pink collection includes this hot shimmer brick, it can be used as an all-over glimmer or as individual eyeshadow or blush.

lake houses and kitchens

erin, you have me thinking about a quiet lake house in upstate new york, or a country cottage in the french countryside, or of course, cuttyhunk, (I am jonesing for some fishing time). I would like a house in each locale, please and thank you. with this kitchen, of course.

room envy

how fabulous are these chairs? chairs like these are the kind you find rusting at a yard sale that you decide not to get because you can't fit the entire set in your car. and then, you kick yourself for days, maybe weeks after. I want to refurbish furniture.

stripes again

this nursery is a little too neat and modern for my taste, but I am digging the striped yellow ceiling. maybe a cute idea for a mudroom? yeah, cause I have one of those.
